Not Your Father’s slow cooker pulled pork
I came up with this recipe by cleaning out my refrigerator. We had people over at the apartment for Memorial Day, and we had a lot of friends bring drinks.
After the holiday weekend, our refrigerator was full of all different beverages… including Not Your Father’s Root Beer. I’ve made pulled pork with regular root beer before, so I hoped that this would work… and it did!

Not Your Father's slow cooker pulled pork
prep time 30 minutes
cook time 6 hours
total time 6 hours 30 minutes
ingredients
- 4 lbs pork shoulder
- salt and pepper
- 1 T vegetable oil
- 1 yellow onion sliced
- 2 12 oz bottles of Not Your Father's Root Beer
- 4 c barbecue sauce, I love using my sweet and tangy barbecue sauce and this Carolina style barbecue sauce.
instructions
-
Season the pork shoulder on all sides with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Brown the pork in the skillet on all sides, and then place it in the slow cooker.
-
Arrange the onion around the pork, and pour the Not Your Father's Root Beer on top. Cook on high for 5-6 hours, or low for 10-11. The pork should be fork tender.
-
Shred the pork. In a large bowl, combine the pork, 1/2 of the juices from the slow cooker, and the barbecue sauce.
recipe notes
Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to 5 days.
